I immigrated to the United States when I was about 8 years old.  I’ve been in this blessed country for roughly 46 years and counting, having become a proud U.S. citizen at the age of 16.  As one can imagine, there have been numerous changes both in and around me.  However, surprisingly, there are also many things that remain the same. One of which is my heritage.  I am a Korean-American.  My heritage and ethnic roots are a fascinating intersection of both the melting pot culture of the U.S., which in and of itself is a distinct culture, and the culture of South Korea. 

I believe it is critically important for many Korean-Americans and their subsequent generations to not only be productive members of this amazing society as proud Americans, but also to never forget our Korean heritage, and in doing so, contribute to the diversity of rich and precious cultures in the melting pot of America.  Languages are a very important component of such cultures.  Languages, and the nuance and sophistication of both written and verbal syntax, most often describe, convey, and encapsulate cultures.

 

HKS, with its deep and abiding roots in Houston since 1980, has been an instrumental vanguard for the preservation, teaching, and promulgation of not only the Korean language but of its culture and history.  As the Chairman of the Board of Directors for KAACCH, we are thankful to have under our umbrella this crucial and impactful endeavor through HKS.  The leadership, administrators, teachers, and other essential staff of HKS have been diligent in providing the best environment to foster the growth of these aims, and we are proud and grateful that HKS exists within a unified body of KAACCH to strengthen and promote the mission of KAACCH and to deepen our impact and influence in the greater Houston community.

저는 8살 무렵 미국으로 이민 왔습니다. 16살에 자랑스러운 미국 시민이 되어, 축복받은 이 나라에서 46년 넘게 살고 있습니다. 짐작하시겠지만, 저와 제 주변에는 수많은 변화가 있었습니다. 하지만 놀랍게도 변하지 않은 것도 많습니다. 그중 하나는 바로 저의 정체성입니다. 저는 자랑스러운 한국계 미국인입니다. 저의 문화적 뿌리는 그 자체로 독특한 미국이라는 용광로 문화와 한국 문화가 만나는 흥미로운 교차점에 있습니다.

저는 많은 한국계 미국인들과 그 후손들이 자랑스러운 미국인으로서 이 놀라운 사회의 생산적인 구성원이 되는 것뿐만 아니라, 우리의 한국 유산을 결코 잊지 않음으로써 아메리카라는 용광로 속 풍부하고 소중한 문화의 다양성에 기여하는 것이 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 언어는 이러한 문화의 매우 중요한 구성 요소입니다. 언어, 그리고 쓰기 및 말하기 구문의 뉘앙스와 정교함은 대부분 문화를 설명하고 전달하며 담아냅니다.

1980년부터 휴스턴에 깊고 변함없는 뿌리를 둔 HKS(휴스턴 한인학교)는 한국어뿐만 아니라 한국의 문화와 역사를 보존하고 가르치며 전파하는 데 중요한 선구자 역할을 해왔습니다. KAACCH(휴스턴 한인회)이사장으로서, 한인회와 함께 HKS와 같이 매우 중요하고 영향력 있는 교육기관이 있음에 감사합니다. 한인학교의 리더십, 행정 직원, 교사, 그리고 다른 필수 직원들은 이러한 목표의 성장을 촉진하기 위한 최고의 환경을 제공하기 위해 부지런히 노력해 왔습니다. 저희는 HKS가 KAACCH의 사명을 강화하고 휴스턴 커뮤니티에서 우리의 영향력을 더욱 깊게 하기 위해 KAACCH라는 단체 안에 존재함을 자랑스럽고 감사하게 생각합니다.
